  • The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all prisons nationwide as “red zones” ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all custodial centres across the country as “red zones” amid planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protests scheduled to hold in parts of Abuja and other cities.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, said the move was to prevent any form of unauthorized access to correctional facilities during the demonstrations.

“The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as red zones,” Umar said. “These are restricted areas, and anyone without official business should stay away to avoid any security breaches or unfortunate incidents.”

He called for public cooperation with security agencies to maintain peace and safety throughout the protest period.

The development follows the planned protest led by activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, who announced a march to the Presidential Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier warned against unauthorized protests around sensitive areas such as Eagle Square and the Central Business District, stressing that anyone who uses demonstrations as a cover for violence or unrest would be “dealt with decisively.”
