  • The Federal Government has announced plans to set up a Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’ to coordinate inter-agency collaboration and position Nigeria as a premier global festive destination.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed plans to establish a Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’ — an initiative designed to enhance coordination among government agencies and promote the country’s image as a leading festive destination during the end-of-year celebrations.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

‘Detty December’ is the popular Nigerian year-end season marked by a flurry of concerts, weddings, cultural events, and homecoming parties, especially by Nigerians in the diaspora. Musawa said the initiative aims to streamline logistics and ensure Nigeria maximizes the economic potential of the festive period.

“The Presidential Task Force on Detty December will bring together key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) — including aviation, interior, and power — to support Lagos and other states in creating a seamless festive experience,” she stated.

In addition, the FEC approved the establishment of Tourism and Cultural Economic Zones across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Musawa noted that these zones will harness each region’s unique cultural assets, drawing inspiration from successful models in Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

“We plan to build on iconic Nigerian destinations such as Obudu, Yankari, and Coco Beach, branding them as standalone tourism hubs,” she said.

Furthermore, the Council approved the Naija Season, a national tourism brand developed by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), to showcase Nigerian festivals and cultural attractions year-round.

Musawa also revealed that FEC reactivated the Presidential Council on Tourism Promotion and Investment, to be chaired by President Tinubu, which will strengthen inter-ministerial collaboration and project Nigeria’s image of peace, unity, and stability.

In a related development, the Council endorsed a cross-sectoral Intellectual Property (IP) reform memorandum by the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Investment, Justice, and Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. The framework will enable Nigerian creatives to leverage their intellectual property as collateral for funding.

“It’s a new dawn for Nigeria’s creative industry — one that gives our artists the power to own, protect, and profit from their ideas,” Musawa said.

Through these initiatives, the Federal Government aims to position Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse and tourism hub, driving sustainable economic growth through creativity and celebration.
