Bandits have reportedly launched an attack along the Osokoko–Obajana axis in Kogi State, targeting two commercial 18-seater buses travelling along the route.

According to local sources, one of the buses was successfully intercepted by the attackers, while the second managed to escape. The exact number of kidnapped passengers is still unknown, but eyewitnesses told Egbe Mekun Parrot that all occupants of the ambushed bus were taken away by the bandits.

A source confirmed that Nigerian Army personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and engaged the attackers in an attempt to repel the assault. Their intervention led to a viral video earlier seen online, which showed stranded travellers waiting on the highway until soldiers confirmed the area was safe.

Earlier reports indicated that the attack occurred on Thursday afternoon, causing panic among residents and motorists. Eyewitnesses said the assailants attempted to block and raid multiple vehicles along the busy road.

Residents have since warned travellers to avoid the Osokoko–Obajana road until security operatives fully secure the area. In one of the videos circulating online, a female traveller confirmed the clearance of the highway, saying: “Road don clear, all thanks to the Nigerian Army, everybody don dey go back.”

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but eyewitnesses maintain that the soldiers successfully repelled the attackers, preventing further casualties or loss of property.

The attack underscores the persistent insecurity troubling major roads in Kogi State, where motorists frequently face threats from armed groups.

This latest incident comes barely 24 hours after another reported attack at Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba Bunu Local Government Area. Bandits stormed the community early Wednesday, attempting to abduct students. Members of the Kiri Vigilante Group quickly mobilised and rescued all the abducted students.

However, the operation came with casualties: one vigilante member was killed during the confrontation, and a resident reported that another civilian also lost his life.

The incidents add to a growing wave of mass kidnappings across Nigeria’s north-central region, where more than 400 people—mostly schoolchildren—have been abducted since mid-November, drawing condemnation from global leaders, including the United Nations.
