Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector is facing a potential shutdown as airline operators warn they may halt flight operations from Thursday, April 30, over the soaring cost of aviation fuel.

Operators say the price of Jet A1 has risen by more than 300 per cent in recent months, placing severe financial strain on airlines. Despite talks with the Federal Government and fuel marketers, no agreement has been reached to address the escalating costs.

Festus Keyamo recently convened a meeting with airline operators and fuel suppliers in Abuja in a bid to resolve the crisis. While the government announced a 30 per cent reduction in aviation-related taxes, airlines insist the measure does not address the core issue of fuel pricing.

Speaking on behalf of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, Vice President Allen Onyema said airlines are struggling to remain operational as fuel prices have surged from about N900 per litre to as high as N3,500 in some locations.

He warned that if urgent action is not taken, airlines may be forced to suspend services nationwide.

Operators have also called for additional relief measures, including a temporary suspension of aviation taxes and the introduction of a non-taxable fuel surcharge to cushion the impact of rising costs.
