‘Abia Under Me Has Changed Completely’ – Alex Otti Reveals Major Achievements After Three Years in Office

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has disclosed that his administration constructed 414 roads spanning about 864.12 kilometres within three years in office.

The governor also revealed that his government reduced the state’s debt profile by nearly 60 per cent.

Otti made the disclosure during his monthly media chat titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians” held in Umuahia.

According to him, the roads constructed under his administration were equipped with street lights and drainage systems.

“We are consistent in terms of delivering street lights with the roads. And of course drainage,” the governor said.

He added that several completed projects would soon be commissioned across the state.

According to Otti, another 82 roads covering about 212 kilometres are currently under construction at different stages of completion.

Speaking on the state’s financial situation, the governor said his administration significantly reduced Abia’s debt burden.

“We have been able to reduce our debt profile significantly by about 60%. From about N191 billion in 2023 to less than N50 billion at the end of 2025,” he stated.

Otti also highlighted improvements in fiscal transparency and accountability, noting that independent rankings showed major progress under his administration.

“The Budget state of the states report moved Abia from No. 17 in 2023 to No. 4 in 2025,” he said.

The governor further disclosed that his administration had identified and recorded assets allegedly acquired illegally as part of ongoing accountability reforms.

On environmental sanitation, Otti said the state now evacuates about 13 tonnes of refuse weekly while over 2,000 jobs have been created through the Abia State Environmental Agency.

In the transportation sector, the governor revealed that more electric buses would arrive in the state by July.

He added that a new bus terminal in Umuahia would be inaugurated later this month while charging stations are being installed in Umuahia and Aba to support the electric bus initiative.

Speaking on land administration reforms, Otti said over 4,700 Certificates of Occupancy had been signed under his government.

“As of yesterday, 4,707 Certificates of Occupancy have been signed. That number is more than the total number signed between 1999 and 2023,” he said.

He also disclosed that the Abia Master Plan had been completed in partnership with UN Habitat while over four million land documents had been digitised.

In education and healthcare, the governor highlighted ongoing investments, including the construction of smart schools and the recruitment of healthcare workers.

According to him, 821 healthcare professionals were recruited, while 771 had already resumed duties across hospitals and primary healthcare centres in the state.

Otti also revealed that over 93,000 residents had enrolled in the state health insurance scheme.

He added that 277 primary healthcare centres had been retrofitted across Abia State, with 121 already fully functional.

The governor said reconstruction and upgrade works are also ongoing in several hospitals and tertiary health institutions across the state.

Otti assured residents that his administration would continue prioritising infrastructure, fiscal responsibility, healthcare, education, and human capital development.

“The most important part of this administration is the impact it has made in human capital development, infrastructure renewal, fiscal responsibility, social justice, all wrapped up in restoring the dignity of our people,” he said.
