The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday revoked the bail earlier granted to Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over his absence from court during proceedings in his ongoing cyberbullying trial.

Trial judge, Justice Mohammed Umar, also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest following an oral application by the prosecution.

The prosecution, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Akinkolu Kehinde, had urged the court to revoke the defendant’s bail after he failed to appear in court.

The State Security Service (SSS) is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

Earlier, on June 5, the court had fixed Tuesday for ruling on an application filed by Sowore through his lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, seeking the judge’s recusal from the case.

However, when the matter was called, neither Sowore nor his counsel was present in court.

The court was informed that the defendant had sent a letter requesting an adjournment of the proceedings.

The prosecution opposed the application, arguing that no sufficient reason had been provided for Sowore’s absence.

Counsel to the prosecution subsequently asked the court to revoke the defendant’s bail and issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

Justice Umar granted the request.

The development marks another twist in the legal proceedings involving the former presidential candidate and activist, whose trial has attracted significant public attention.

Further court proceedings are expected as authorities move to enforce the court’s order.
