FG to Replace NYSC Khaki Uniform With Made-in-Nigeria Adire

• The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the NYSC’s traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of major reforms aimed at promoting local industries.

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms approved for the scheme.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the initiative is aimed at boosting local industries by ensuring government spending supports Nigerian textile manufacturers.

According to the minister, the Adire fabric will be sourced from local producers in states such as Ogun and Kwara, stressing that the move aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting Made-in-Nigeria products.

Olawande also disclosed that corps members will increasingly be posted based on their academic qualifications and professional skills. He explained that graduates in education, health, engineering and other fields would be deployed to relevant sectors to make the scheme more impactful.

On security, he revealed that the government is considering deploying corps members to regions where they studied or are familiar with, especially in security-sensitive areas, while those willing to serve elsewhere can still indicate their interest.

The minister dismissed claims that the military would be removed from the NYSC, clarifying that while the scheme will now be headed by a civilian under the new reforms, the military will continue providing security support during orientation camps and throughout national service.

The reforms, recently approved by the Federal Executive Council, represent the most significant overhaul of the NYSC since its establishment in 1973.
