The Federal Government has approved an upward review of hazard allowances and other earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) working in federal universities.

Under the newly approved remuneration package, senior non-teaching staff will receive an increase of up to ₦126,000 annually in laboratory hazard allowance, while several responsibility allowances have also been reviewed upward.

The new package takes retrospective effect from January 1, 2026.

The approval was contained in a circular dated July 20, 2026, issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026.

The circular, signed by the Acting Secretary of the Commission, Adighiogu A. Chiadi, was addressed to top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies.

According to the circular, the Federal Government approved the payment of the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance and reviewed earned allowances for eligible NASU members in federal universities.

Hazard Allowance Increased

One of the major highlights of the review is the increase in laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowances.

For staff on CONTISS 1–5, the annual hazard allowance has increased from ₦180,000 to ₦243,000, representing an increase of ₦63,000.

For workers on CONTISS 6–15, the allowance rises from ₦360,000 to ₦486,000 annually, an increase of ₦126,000.

Although the increases fall short of NASU’s demands, they represent one of the most significant reviews of non-teaching staff allowances in recent years.

The government also retained call duty, shift duty and clinical hazard allowances in line with existing NSIWC guidelines.

Meanwhile, payments for high-risk allowances will continue under the Employees’ Compensation Act 2010, rather than through a fixed annual payment.

Higher Responsibility Allowances

The Federal Government also approved improved responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching officials.

Under the new structure:

  • Registrars and bursars will now receive ₦840,000 annually (₦70,000 monthly), up from ₦750,000 annually.
  • Directors, who previously had no responsibility allowance, will now receive ₦600,000 annually (₦50,000 monthly).
  • Deputy registrars, deputy bursars and deputy directors will receive ₦480,000 annually (₦40,000 monthly).
  • Heads of departments and units will now earn ₦360,000 annually (₦30,000 monthly), up from ₦300,000.
  • Heads of sections, who previously had no approved responsibility allowance, will now receive ₦150,000 annually (₦12,500 monthly).
