An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court has remanded a lesson teacher, identified simply as Michael, at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old student in the Ketu area of Lagos State.

The development was confirmed on Friday by the Lagos State Police Command, days after reports emerged alleging that some police officers attempted to frustrate the prosecution of the case.

The survivor’s mother, Mrs. Zainab Musa, had earlier accused some officers of pressuring her family to accept ₦200,000 and withdraw the case.

Reacting to the allegation earlier in the week, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, described the claim as “a mere allegation” and maintained that the police remained committed to prosecuting the suspect.

She explained that the case was reported at the Ketu Police Station on July 13, and that the suspect was arrested and detained on the same day.

According to Adebisi, arrangements were being made to arraign the suspect on July 15 when he suddenly collapsed in the presence of the survivor and her mother.

“He was immediately rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital at Toll Gate, where he was admitted, and was later transferred to Gbagada General Hospital,” she said.

Providing an update on Friday, the police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect had since recovered sufficiently to appear in court.

“The suspect has been arraigned before the Ogudu Magistrates’ Court and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre,” Adebisi said.

She added that the case has been adjourned until August 24 for further hearing.

According to earlier reports, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted the teenager on multiple occasions inside a tutorial centre and threatened her to remain silent.

Following reports that the suspect had been hospitalised after collapsing, the founder of DOHS Cares Foundation, Ololade Ajayi, called on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure the suspect did not evade justice.

The case continues as authorities pursue prosecution over the alleged offence.
