- The Nigerian stock market gained ₦1.75 trillion on October 27 as heavyweight shares lifted the NGX index by 1.07%, before surrendering part of the gain on Wednesday.

The Nigerian stock market recorded a strong performance on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, adding approximately ₦1.75 trillion to the combined market value of listed equities.
VerseNews reports that equity market capitalisation increased to ₦164.91 trillion from ₦163.16 trillion in the preceding session.
The benchmark All-Share Index advanced by 1.07 per cent, gaining 2,699.52 points to close at 253,990.06 points, compared with Monday’s closing figure of 251,290.54 points.
The advance lifted the market’s year-to-date return to 63.22 per cent, with gains in heavyweight companies helping to sustain the upward movement despite declines in other stocks.
Dangote Cement supports market advance
Dangote Cement was among the major contributors to Tuesday’s performance, rising by 9.80 per cent to close at ₦1,341.90 per share.
UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust gained 10 per cent to finish at ₦19.25, while Honeywell Flour Mills advanced by 9.67 per cent to ₦21.55. Nigerian Aviation Handling Company also rose by 8 per cent to close at ₦151.20.
The gains helped lift the overall market even as several other companies recorded losses.
Presco fell by 10 per cent to ₦1,840.80, while Transcorp declined by 9.70 per cent to ₦32.60, illustrating the uneven performance across individual stocks.
Trading volume reaches 5.23 billion shares
Investors exchanged approximately 5.23 billion shares across 35,882 deals during Tuesday’s equities session.
Trading also took place in other market segments. Exchange-traded funds accounted for 151,290 units across 712 deals, while the debt securities segment recorded 26,543 units in 10 transactions.
The industrial index strengthened, increasing from 11,218.05 points to 11,834.55 points.
What the ₦1.75tn increase represents
The increase reflects a rise in the combined market valuation of listed shares. Market capitalisation measures the value of a company’s outstanding shares at prevailing market prices.
It does not mean that ₦1.75 trillion in new cash entered the exchange during the session, nor that every shareholder recorded a gain.
Individual investment performance depends on the stocks held and their price movements. The rise in the benchmark index therefore needs to be considered alongside the losses recorded by other companies.
Market gives back part of the gain on Wednesday
The rally did not continue into the next session.
On Wednesday, October 28, the All-Share Index declined by 1,107.28 points, or 0.44 per cent, to close at 252,882.78 points.
Equity market capitalisation fell by approximately ₦718.95 billion to ₦164.19 trillion. Investors traded about 404.08 million shares across 38,970 deals.
Wednesday’s decline reversed part of Tuesday’s advance, although the closing market valuation remained above Monday’s ₦163.16 trillion level.
