- Liverpool vs Chelsea ended in a dramatic 6–5 penalty shootout victory for the Reds after a 1–1 draw, securing Liverpool’s place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Liverpool knocked Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, October 28, winning a tense penalty shootout 6–5 after their fourth-round clash at Anfield finished 1–1.
Joe Gomez converted Liverpool’s decisive spot-kick before Wesley Fofana fired over the crossbar, ending a contest in which both teams had opportunities to settle the outcome.
Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo had exchanged penalties during the first half, but neither side could find a winner before the shootout. Liverpool’s victory secured their passage into the quarter-finals.
Rogers strikes first, Gakpo responds
Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moisés Caicedo inside the penalty area.
Rogers converted the resulting spot-kick, giving the visitors an advantage that lasted only three minutes.
Liverpool received a penalty of their own when Fofana handled the ball following a corner. Gakpo stepped forward and scored in the 43rd minute, restoring parity before the interval.
Goalkeepers keep the contest alive
Both sides created opportunities after the break, with the goalkeepers playing important roles in preserving the scoreline.
Chelsea’s Mike Penders denied a close-range Ronald Araujo header and reacted sharply to keep out a deflected Bradley Barcola effort.
At the other end, Giorgi Mamardashvili saved from substitute Marco Palestra as Chelsea threatened to regain the lead.
Late defensive blocks from Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong also helped keep Liverpool out, sending the tie to penalties in front of the Kop.
Both teams miss chances to win shootout
The first seven penalties were converted before Chelsea’s Valentín Barco missed, giving Liverpool an opportunity to finish the contest.
Kostas Tsimikas could not take it, sending his effort over the bar. Jordan Henderson then scored to bring Chelsea level at 4–4 and force sudden death.
Bradley Barcola and Levi Colwill both converted before Penders saved Gravenberch’s penalty.
That handed Chelsea a chance to win, but Mamardashvili stopped Emmanuel Emegha’s effort, keeping Liverpool in the competition.
Gomez then scored to put the hosts 6–5 ahead. Fofana’s subsequent miss settled the shootout on its 16th kick.
Bournemouth await Liverpool
Liverpool will host Bournemouth at Anfield in the quarter-finals, with a place in the last four at stake.
For Chelsea, the defeat ends their Carabao Cup campaign after a match in which they led during normal time and later had a shootout opportunity to advance.
