Tinubu’s Ministerial List And Nigeria’s Politics Of Compensation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s style of ministerial appointment is not new from what previous presidents have done – appointing political figures who have supported them during their election campaigns or rewarding their friends and loyalists who have been with them in trying times.

VerseNews Nigeria understands that this politics of compensation we see at every new administration not only at the federal level but the state as well isn’t really good at this present time when there is global economic turmoil.

It is even worse in this part of the world (Nigeria) knowing the kind of economic situation we are in that President Tinubu despite his gospel of development while he was Governor of Lagos State and his Renewed Hope Agenda would stoop low to nominate former governors of Ebonyi state David Umahi, Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of Kaduna state and Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa state even the much talked about Nyesom Wike of Rivers state whom on national television emphatically told Nigerians that he will not accept any ministerial appointment if he’s approached and putting his integrity at stake.

What is the success story of former Governor, El-Rufai that warranted him to make the President Tinubu’s ministerial list. Is it not the Kaduna State he governed for eight years where insecurity got worse that the British Government included Kaduna State as one of the red flag zones, was it not the same Kaduna State he governed that innocent lives in Southern Kaduna were been slaughtered almost on a daily basis.

Appointing a former governor who was unable to tame insecurity in his state is gross insensitivity on Nigerians.

The same goes to former Governor of Ebonyi, Umahi who only decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) few months before the party’s presidential primary.

It is pity on the people of Ebonyi that the governor left the state worse than he met it when it comes to insecurity.

Due to the nonperformance of the Governor after eight years, Ebonyi State has now become a bee hive of activities for members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It is a shame that he was appointed as minister designate.

It is even more laughable on President Tinubu in his latest ministerial list to the Senate that he would include the former Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola who could not secure for himself a re-election.

This is an outright display of ineptitude on the part of the former governor. It is a prove of failure on the Governor that he was rejected by his own people in the ballot.

These are governors who have not been able to live up to expectations and bringing them on board as ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is gross disregard on the Nigerian people.

It is pertinent to note that Nigeria and Nigerians cannot afford the possibility of another eight years of failure by appointing political figures who failed to improve the wellbeing of those they governed for eight years not to talk about making their states industrial hubs for investment destinations and now they have been appointed to occupy sensitive ministries that require the best of the best brains in the country.

While it is yet too early to start predicting whether the administration of President Tinubu would perform or not these are already signs that his tenure will not be different from his predecessor – Muhammadu Buhari after all, he promised to build on his legacies.
