The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is in advanced stages of planning to introduce Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for administering its examinations, according to the Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan.

VerseNews reports that Mr. Areghan shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria as he prepares to complete his three-year tenure and step down from his role on October 1.

He explained that the move towards CBT examinations has been part of his vision for the council’s future.

However, there are challenges to consider, especially in practical and essay papers, where CBT might not be easily applicable.

Mr. Areghan emphasized the importance of computer literacy in schools and the availability of computer facilities and electricity as factors affecting the adoption of CBT.

He suggested that WAEC could start by introducing CBT for objective questions and gradually expand to theory and practical papers.

The outgoing WAEC boss also mentioned the possibility of a segregated market, where schools that cannot afford CBT would still have the option of using the traditional pencil and paper mode.

In addition to CBT, Mr. Areghan expressed his desire to see all operations of the council fully digitized in the near future.
