Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has reacted with shock and anger to the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba by ISWAP terrorists, calling the incident a tragic reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis and a failure of national leadership.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his official X account Monday night, Atiku said he was “deeply saddened and extremely shocked” by the senior officer’s death and criticised the military’s initial handling of the situation, accusing authorities of issuing unclear and contradictory explanations.

He noted that early official communication appeared to deny the general’s killing, raising questions about transparency within the security establishment.

“This for me is unequivocally a failure of political leadership as the President seems only more interested in decimating the opposition by all means possible, while forgetting his crucial role as Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces,” Atiku said.

Describing the death of Gen. Uba and other soldiers as “one death too many,” the former Vice President warned that the incident signalled a dangerous terrorist resurgence that Nigeria must not overlook.

He urged citizens and troops to stay hopeful, saying:

“Even this season shall pass away.”

Directing his remarks at President Bola Tinubu, Atiku insisted that protecting Nigerian lives is the administration’s foremost responsibility.

“You must live up to it or be humble enough to admit incompetence and either ask for help or resign,” he declared.

Atiku added that if he were Commander-in-Chief, he would immediately order the military to occupy Borno State—or any state under siege—until full security was restored, stressing the need to prioritise the welfare and safety of frontline troops.

He also extended condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces, the family of the slain general, and all Nigerians affected by the renewed wave of violence.

“May this dark period pass over us as a nation, sooner than later,” he said.

Brigadier General Musa Uba, Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade in Damboa, Borno State, was reportedly ambushed by ISWAP terrorists along the Damboa–Wajiroko Road, where he and members of his team were killed.
