The Nigerian Immigration Service has issued a strong advisory to citizens travelling to the United States, warning against visa misuse.

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong advisory, warning citizens against the misuse of United States visas, following concerns raised by the US government.

In the advisory released Friday and signed by NIS spokesperson ACI AS Akinlabi, the service urged all visa holders to “strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications.”

Akinlabi emphasized that US security screening “continues beyond the entry point,” warning that “any violation of immigration or other US laws may likely result in visa revocation or deportation.”

He added that a “breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel.”

Addressing Nigerian students in the US, the advisory stated that they “must remain in active study,” stressing that “withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic programme without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.”

Akinlabi also noted that consular officers may deny tourist visas “if they believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for the child.”

He concluded by affirming the NIS’s ongoing partnership with the U.S. Mission in Abuja, stating that “compliance with visa regulations is essential to safeguard legitimate travel by Nigerian citizens.”
