Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has suspended seven lecturers amid a widening investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, sex-for-marks, cultism, extortion and other forms of misconduct within the institution.

Six of the affected lecturers were suspended over the alleged unauthorized sale of handouts and textbooks, while another lecturer was suspended over allegations of sexual harassment.

The institution’s spokesperson, John Onimisi, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja.

“Six lecturers on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, were suspended by the management of the institution for the unauthorised sale of handouts and textbooks, while a lecturer was also suspended for alleged sexual harassment,” the statement read.

The suspensions come amid growing concerns over allegations of sex-for-marks, cult-related activities and declining discipline within the institution.

According to sources within the polytechnic, some lecturers allegedly demanded sexual favours or money from female students in exchange for passing grades.

The sources also claimed that disciplinary measures introduced by the institution’s previous administration had weakened, creating an environment where misconduct among staff and students had increased.

One source further alleged that some female students who reported cases of sexual harassment received little institutional support and were instead intimidated after speaking out.

There were also claims that cult groups had resumed holding nocturnal meetings on campus despite previous efforts by the school to stamp out such activities.

In addition, the sources alleged that the unauthorized sale of handouts had resurfaced, while the enforcement of the institution’s dress code and student identity card policy had become lax, contributing to what they described as a decline in discipline.

Reacting to the allegations, the institution’s spokesperson said the management had already commenced investigations through its disciplinary committee.

“The school management is aware of the allegations, and the disciplinary committee of the Polytechnic is already investigating them. The outcome will be made available to journalists in due course,” Onimisi said.

The management assured students and members of the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against anyone found guilty once investigations are concluded.
