Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, spent Monday night at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as questioning intensified over an ongoing investigation.

A close associate told VerseNews that Malami was invited earlier in the day, but arrived late in the evening, leading to an overnight stay so he could continue answering investigators’ questions. The associate also revealed that 46 bank accounts allegedly linked to Malami are currently under scrutiny, forming a key line of inquiry.

Malami is expected to report to the EFCC every day as the investigation progresses.

After an earlier interrogation on November 29, Malami had posted on X that the session “was successful” and that he had been scheduled for further meetings with investigators.

“The engagement was successful, and I am eventually released while on an appointment for further engagement as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continue to unfold,” he said.

Multiple Deals Under Investigation

Reports indicate that the EFCC is examining at least five major transactions associated with Malami during his tenure in office.

Among the contentious issues is the $496 million payment to Global Steel Holdings Ltd as compensation for the termination of the Ajaokuta Steel concession — despite the company having previously waived claims for compensation.

Other matters include:

  • Handling of the sale of forfeited assets worth billions of naira
  • The $419 million judgment debt awarded to consultants over Paris Club refunds
  • A $200 million compensation agreement with Sunrise Power regarding the Mambilla power project
  • Allegations of duplicated legal fees during the return of $321 million Abacha loot from Switzerland

These transactions have drawn intense scrutiny from investigators and stakeholders.

Political Ambition

On November 17, Malami declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

He resigned from the APC in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the decision followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection.” He claimed he left the ruling party out of “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing.”

Malami’s camp has maintained that the allegations against him are “fabricated,” while the EFCC continues its probe into his financial dealings.
