Cristiano Ronaldo may have returned to the scoresheet in spectacular fashion at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but there was one topic he simply wasn’t interested in discussing—Lionel Messi.
Fresh from scoring twice in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan on Tuesday, the Portuguese superstar was asked whether he would like to face Argentina captain Lionel Messi later in the tournament.
The reporter barely got through the question before Ronaldo cut him off.
“Next question,” the 41-year-old replied, bringing an abrupt end to the conversation and leaving journalists in the room smiling.
The moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans debating whether Ronaldo was avoiding comparisons with his longtime rival or simply keeping his focus on Portugal’s campaign.
The exchange came just days after Messi made history by becoming the men’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 18 goals, surpassing Germany legend Miroslav Klose. The Argentine captain is also leading the Golden Boot race with five goals after Argentina’s opening two matches.
Ronaldo, however, appeared determined to keep the spotlight on Portugal’s response following their disappointing draw against DR Congo.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner finally opened his World Cup account by scoring twice against Uzbekistan, helping Portugal secure a convincing victory and restoring confidence within the squad.
After the match, Ronaldo admitted the days leading up to the game had been difficult.
“It was a difficult, dark week. It felt like I was already retired from football. But I held on, like I always do, because I believe in work more than anything else.”
The Portuguese captain also praised his teammates for helping him bounce back.
“I knew my teammates were going to help me. It was difficult, I have to admit, but we’re back. I’m very happy.”
His brace also saw him become the first men’s player in history to score in six different FIFA World Cups, adding yet another incredible record to his legendary career.
Despite the historic milestone, Ronaldo insisted his focus remains on the team’s success rather than individual achievements.
“Records are always nice to break, but my goal is to help the national team achieve its objectives.”
Later in the press conference, another reporter asked if he could ask a question, prompting Ronaldo to jokingly reply:
“That depends on the question, otherwise I won’t answer you.”
Although he avoided discussing Messi directly, Ronaldo did briefly react to the possibility of a dream World Cup final between Portugal and Argentina.
“I don’t know what to answer. It’s a question that doesn’t make much sense. But, well, it would be top.”
With both football legends continuing to make history on the world’s biggest stage, fans around the globe will undoubtedly keep dreaming of one final showdown between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi before their remarkable World Cup journeys come to an end. ⚽🔥
