Reuben Abati says Peter Obi’s “I will do one term, I will serve you food” comment is a sign of “desperation,” urging Nigerians to focus on competence, not political gimmicks.

Reuben Abati, popular media personality and former presidential spokesperson, has taken a swipe at Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, over his recent “one-term presidency” comment.

Speaking during the Arise Television programme in a now-viral video on Monday, Abati described Obi’s vow to serve only one term if elected president as a clear “sign of desperation.”

“What I am saying is that any politician that comes to you and says that I am going to do only one term, that is a sign of desperation,” Abati stated.

The comment has continued to generate mixed reactions nationwide. Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had said he would serve for only one term if elected, a position he has since reaffirmed despite criticism from several quarters.

Abati, however, did not hold back, also mocking Obi’s campaign gestures like “serving food” and doing “boy-boy” at parties.

“It will not work. Just like the gambit about serving food and carrying plates or doing boy-boy at parties that will be better organised by event organisers. It is also a sign of desperation; it will not work,” he said.

He further stressed that Nigeria will only move forward when voters prioritize competence over religion, region, or sentiment.

“If Nigerian people are politically educated to a point where they can vote for a competent person regardless of where he comes from or his religion, that’s when the country will begin to move forward,” Abati concluded.
