Sowore Vows to Reverse Tinubu Highway Naming, Other Public Asset Renamings

• AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has vowed to reverse the naming of highways and public institutions after President Bola Tinubu and other serving officials if elected in 2027

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to reverse the naming of highways, public institutions and other national assets after President Bola Tinubu and other public office holders if he emerges victorious in the 2027 presidential election.

Sowore made the declaration in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Friday while reacting to the Federal Government’s decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Tinubu.

According to him, any public assets named after officials of the current administration would be restored to neutral or appropriate names under his government.

“The naming of highways, national institutions, and public assets after officials of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime that impoverished Nigeria and those who enabled its decline will be reversed as a matter of urgency under a #Sowore2027 administration,” he wrote.

His comments came a day after the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would officially be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Umahi said the decision was taken in recognition of Tinubu’s long-standing vision for the landmark infrastructure project.

The minister explained that the Ministry of Works approved the renaming following consultations with the ministry’s leadership, including the Permanent Secretary, Minister of State, directors and other senior officials.

“That coastal highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it,” Umahi said.

He added that Tinubu first conceived the idea for the coastal highway about 27 years ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State.

“It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream,” the minister stated.

Umahi also disclosed that President Tinubu had approved a 400-kilometre extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway, increasing its length from 700 kilometres to 1,100 kilometres. The approval also covers the reconstruction of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and several other major federal road projects.

Sowore’s latest promise adds to a series of reforms he has proposed ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The AAC candidate recently pledged to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), proposing that universities conduct their own admissions through a transparent merit-based process while replacing the NYSC with a voluntary two-year National Job Corps focused on employment, entrepreneurship and skills development.
