The first batch of Team Nigeria athletes and officials has departed its pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, for Glasgow, the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with just days left before the competition begins.

A second batch of athletes and officials is scheduled to move into the Games Village on Friday, joining teammates already preparing for the opening events.

The phased relocation follows several weeks of intensive training and acclimatisation in Aberdeen, where Team Nigeria has been fine-tuning preparations with support from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The commission provided technical, medical and welfare support to ensure the contingent arrives in Glasgow in top condition.

Sprinter Favour Ashe praised the quality of the training camp, revealing that athletes had received all their allowances before the Games.

“The camp has been excellent. Our allowances have been paid in full, the facilities are world-class, and the feeding is of a very high standard. The National Sports Commission has done a fantastic job in ensuring we have everything we need to prepare for the Commonwealth Games,” Ashe said.

He added that the arrangements allowed athletes to focus entirely on training without concerns over welfare.

Former world and Olympic wrestling champion Daniel Igali also commended the National Sports Commission for its support during preparations.

Nigeria’s medal hopes will largely rest on world record holder Tobi Amusan, who joined the Aberdeen camp last week after an impressive Diamond League season that secured her a place in the season-ending final in Brussels.

The 29-year-old is aiming to win a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles after triumphing in 2018 and 2022. She heads into the Games as one of the favourites after defending her African title earlier this year and recording a season’s best of 12.28 seconds on three occasions.

However, Team Nigeria has suffered a setback with the withdrawal of long jump star Ese Brume due to injury, ending her bid to defend the title she won at the previous Games.

Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the squad to replace Brume and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump.
