Spain have climbed to the top of the FIFA Men’s World Rankings following their 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, ending Argentina’s reign as the world’s highest-ranked national team.

The latest rankings, released after Sunday’s World Cup final, see La Roja move into first place after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium to win their second World Cup title.

Spain gained significant ranking points during their title-winning campaign, finishing with 1,995.88 points to overtake Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina, who dropped to second on 1,970.37 points after losing the final.

France retained third place despite their third-place playoff defeat to England, while England remained fourth after their victory over Les Bleus. Brazil completed the top five.

Morocco strengthened its position as Africa’s highest-ranked team, climbing to sixth in the world after an impressive run to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Egypt also made gains following its Round of 16 appearance, overtaking Nigeria on the African rankings. The Super Eagles remained 26th globally but slipped to fourth in Africa.

Norway recorded one of the biggest jumps in the rankings, climbing 12 places to 19th after a memorable World Cup campaign that included a shock victory over Brazil.

Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands occupy seventh, eighth and ninth places respectively, while Mexico broke into the world’s top 10 after climbing four spots.

Germany dropped to 12th in the latest rankings, while Italy slipped to 15th following the World Cup recalculations.

The updated rankings will remain in effect until FIFA releases its next official rankings update in October 2026.
