Many Nigerians applying for a United States visa want an earlier interview date because regular appointments may be far away.

The U.S. government allows applicants to request an emergency or expedited visa appointment, but only in limited situations. It is not for everyone, and approval is not guaranteed.

According to the U.S. Department of State, consular sections may expedite an interview date when there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency or school start date.

What Is a US Visa Emergency Appointment?

A US visa emergency appointment is an earlier interview date given to an applicant who has a genuine urgent reason to travel.

It is also called an expedited appointment.

It does not mean your visa is automatically approved. It only means the Embassy or Consulate agrees to interview you earlier than your regular appointment date.

Who Qualifies for US Visa Emergency Appointment in Nigeria?

You may qualify if your reason is urgent, unexpected and supported with strong documents.

Common qualifying reasons include:

1. Medical Emergency

You may qualify if you need urgent medical treatment in the United States or you need to accompany an immediate family member for emergency treatment.

Documents may include:

  • Death certificate
  • Funeral home letter
  • Burial date
  • Proof of relationship
  • Invitation or letter from family in the U.S.

3. Urgent Student or Exchange Visitor Start Date

Students and exchange visitors may qualify if their programme start date is close and no regular appointment is available before that date.

Documents may include:

  • Form I-20 for F-1 or M-1 visa
  • Form DS-2019 for J-1 visa
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • Admission letter
  • Proof of school resumption date

This is common for students whose admission may be affected if they miss the start date.

4. Other Rare Humanitarian Emergencies

In rare cases, the consular section may consider other humanitarian or urgent reasons. However, the applicant must provide clear evidence.

Reasons That Usually Do Not Qualify

The U.S. Department of State says the following reasons usually do not qualify for an expedited appointment:

  • Graduation ceremony
  • Visiting a pregnant relative
  • Annual conference
  • Business conference
  • Tourism
  • Holiday travel
  • Birthday celebration
  • “I want to travel soon”
  • Buying flight ticket before getting a visa

Applicants should not book non-refundable flights before getting a visa.

Step 3: Book the First Available Regular Appointment

You must first schedule the earliest regular appointment available.

The U.S. Department of State says expedited requests are considered only after the applicant has:

  • submitted DS-160,
  • paid the application fee,
  • and scheduled the first available interview appointment.

Step 4: Request Emergency Appointment

After booking the regular date, log in to your visa appointment profile and look for the option to request an expedited or emergency appointment.

You will need to:

  • select the reason for emergency,
  • explain the situation clearly,
  • upload or provide supporting documents,
  • and submit the request.

Step 5: Wait for Decision

The Embassy or Consulate will review your request.

If approved, you will be allowed to choose an earlier date. If denied, your original appointment remains valid.

Lagos or Abuja: Where Should You Apply?

Nigeria has U.S. visa services through:

  • U.S. Embassy Abuja
  • U.S. Consulate General Lagos

However, applicants should check the official appointment portal because appointment availability and processing location may change.

The U.S. Department of State recently updated its guidance, advising applicants to schedule nonimmigrant visa interviews in their country of nationality or residence.

Does Emergency Appointment Guarantee Visa Approval?

No.

Emergency appointment only gives you an earlier interview. You must still qualify for the visa under U.S. immigration law.

A consular officer can still refuse the visa if you do not meet the requirements.

Warning Against Visa Agents

Avoid agents who claim they can guarantee emergency appointments or visa approval.

No agent can guarantee:

  • emergency slot approval,
  • visa approval,
  • faster processing,
  • or special treatment from the Embassy.

Use only official U.S. government visa websites and approved appointment platforms.

A US visa emergency appointment in Nigeria is only for genuine urgent cases such as medical emergencies, funeral travel or urgent student start dates.

Before requesting an emergency appointment, you must complete the DS-160, pay the visa fee and schedule the first available regular appointment.

If your reason is tourism, wedding, graduation, conference or general business travel, you should book a regular appointment early instead.
