  • Victor Osimhen was visibly emotional as Nigeria crashed out of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against DR Congo, ending the Super Eagles’ hopes despite a spirited run in the CAF play-offs.

Victor Osimhen was reduced to tears as Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup were shattered following a painful defeat to DR Congo.

Nigeria had reignited their qualification campaign with a brilliant 4-1 victory over Gabon on Thursday in the CAF second-round play-off semi-final. After Chidera Ejuke restored the lead early in extra time, Osimhen struck twice, continuing his explosive form for both club and country.

Eric Chelle’s men learned shortly afterwards that their final opponents would be DR Congo, who stunned Cameroon in the other semifinal.

With Wilfred Ndidi cleared to play after an initial suspension scare, the Super Eagles entered the final as favourites to become Africa’s representative at FIFA’s inter-confederation playoffs scheduled for early next year.

Nigeria started brightly, taking the lead inside three minutes as Frank Onyeka’s deflected effort found the net. Onyeka had previously been instrumental in securing Nigeria’s playoff spot with his late goal against Benin in the final group match.

However, the momentum shifted when Meschack Elia equalised just after the half-hour mark. Both sides remained deadlocked through the remainder of the 90 minutes and extra time.

The match ultimately went to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. DR Congo substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu emerged the hero after saving Semi Ajayi’s attempt in sudden death. Captain Chancel Mbemba then converted the winning penalty, sealing Nigeria’s elimination.

Osimhen watched the shootout from the sidelines after being substituted at halftime for Akor Adams due to discomfort in his leg. His emotional walk off the pitch quickly went viral across X, where he was seen wiping away tears.

Despite his heartbreak, Osimhen was among the first players to console the squad after the final whistle, highlighting his leadership in a devastating moment for Nigerian football.
