Lagos BRT Driver To Be Charged For Manslaughter, Bloody Harm, Others Over Train Collision

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Oluwaseun Osibanjo has said the driver of the BRT bus conveying Lagos staff that collided with Train will be charged with 6 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous bodily harm.

VerseNews Nigeria reports that the plan was made known in a statement signed on Friday by the Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Grace Alo.

According to reports made available to this Online News Media, the passengers begged the driver to wait for the train to pass, but he ignored their plead and attempted to overtake the train which resulted to a fatal collision.

This Online News Media reported that the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said a total number of 102 passengers were recorded in the accident; six persons have been confirmed dead.

In the statement released upon investigation of the accident, it was gathered that the driver committed offences contrary to Section 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The statement reads; “Upon the receipt and review of the case file by the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), a prima facie case of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm were disclosed against the driver of the Staff bus.

“Accordingly, he is to be charged with 6 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous bodily harm.

“Both offences are contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” the statement read.

The statement added that the Office of the DPP would immediately file charges against the driver.

However, his arraignment before the Ikeja High Court would be delayed until he is fully fit to stand trial, having sustained serious injuries during the accident.
