The United States has announced that routine visa processing at its Embassy in Abuja will end from August 1, 2026, as part of a major overhaul of its overseas consular operations.

The decision, announced by the US Department of State, affects the US Embassy in Abuja and 24 other diplomatic missions across Africa. According to the department, routine visa applications will now be handled through designated regional processing hubs as part of efforts to strengthen national security, improve efficiency, reduce government spending, and ensure more consistent visa screening and adjudication.
