The Federal Government has launched a new youth training programme called Power Force, designed to train young Nigerians as certified smart meter installers and technicians.

The programme is part of the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), a federal-led effort to close Nigeria’s electricity metering gap, reduce estimated billing and create jobs in the power sector.

According to the State House, the first phase of the programme will train 5,000 young Nigerians and help support the rollout of smart electricity meters across the country.

What Is the FG Smart Meter Training Programme?

The FG smart meter training programme is officially known as Power Force.

It is not just a “meter reader” job. It is a technical training and certification programme for youths who want to work in the electricity metering value chain.

Successful applicants will be trained on smart meter installation, technical standards and other practical skills needed in Nigeria’s power sector.

The programme is being implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in collaboration with key power-sector institutions.

Who Will Train the Applicants?

The training will be delivered by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN).

Certification and compliance standards will be overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

This means successful trainees are expected to receive recognised training and certification that can help them work with distribution companies, meter providers and other partners in the electricity industry.

Why the Programme Was Created

The Federal Government says the programme was created to support the accelerated deployment of smart meters across Nigeria.

For many years, Nigerian electricity consumers have complained about estimated billing, poor transparency and inaccurate charges.

The Presidential Metering Initiative is expected to help close the national metering gap and improve trust between consumers and electricity distribution companies.

The Power Force programme also gives young people a chance to gain technical skills and access employment or entrepreneurship opportunities in the power sector.

How Many Youths Will Be Trained?

The first phase of the programme will train 5,000 young Nigerians.

The State House said the first phase will begin in Abuja before the programme is rolled out across the six geopolitical zones.

This means applicants from other parts of the country may also benefit as the programme expands.

The programme could also help some participants start small technical businesses in the metering and electricity service value chain.

Why Youths Should Take It Seriously

This programme is important because smart metering is one of the biggest areas of reform in Nigeria’s power sector.

As more smart meters are deployed, the country will need trained installers, maintenance workers and field technicians.
