Brazil’s dream of winning a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday after Erling Haaland inspired Norway to a famous 2-1 victory at the Meadowlands, sealing the Scandinavian nation’s place in the quarterfinals.

The Manchester City striker once again proved why he is regarded as one of the world’s deadliest forwards, scoring twice after the break to eliminate one of football’s biggest giants. Neymar pulled one back from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, but it was only a consolation as Norway comfortably held on for a historic victory.

Brazil had the perfect opportunity to seize control early in the contest when Matheus Cunha won a penalty inside the opening minutes. However, goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland emerged as Norway’s hero, producing an excellent save to deny Bruno Guimarães from the spot.

That missed opportunity proved costly.

After a balanced first half, Norway emerged from the dressing room with renewed energy following two inspired substitutions by head coach Ståle Solbakken. Andreas Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb replaced Alexander Sørloth and Antonio Nusa, changes that completely transformed Norway’s attack.

The breakthrough arrived when Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross that Haaland met with a towering header after beating Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães.

Moments later, the pair combined again. Schjelderup found Haaland inside the box, and the prolific striker calmly fired a low shot beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker to double Norway’s advantage and leave Brazil chasing the game.

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti introduced Neymar, Endrick and other attacking options in an attempt to spark a comeback, but the changes failed to alter the flow of the match.

Neymar eventually converted a stoppage-time penalty after Brazil were awarded another spot kick, reducing the deficit to 2-1, but Norway saw out the remaining minutes to complete one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Haaland Continues Golden Boot Charge

Haaland’s brace took his World Cup tally to seven goals, drawing him level with both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Although the Norwegian striker had relatively few touches throughout the match, he once again demonstrated his ruthless efficiency in front of goal. Norway have now won their last 17 matches whenever Haaland has found the back of the net, underlining his immense influence on the team.

Brazil’s European Curse Continues

The defeat also extended Brazil’s miserable record against European opponents in the World Cup.

It marks the sixth consecutive World Cup elimination for the South American giants at the hands of European opposition, following previous exits against Croatia in 2022, Belgium in 2018, Germany in 2014, the Netherlands in 2010 and France in 2006.

Despite appointing legendary Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti as the first foreign manager in Brazil’s history, the Selecao were unable to reverse the trend.

Brazil’s exit is also their earliest departure from the World Cup in 36 years, a disappointing outcome for a nation that entered the tournament hoping to reclaim football’s biggest prize.

Norway Eye Historic Run

Norway’s impressive display showed they are far more than a one-man team.

Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland delivered a superb performance, highlighted by his first-half penalty save and several outstanding stops throughout the game. In midfield, Martin Ødegaard, Patrick Berg and Sander Berge controlled possession and dictated the tempo, while the defence remained disciplined against Brazil’s star-studded attack.

With confidence soaring and Haaland in sensational form, Norway will now face the winner of the England versus Mexico clash in the quarterfinals in Miami.

After eliminating five-time world champions Brazil, Solbakken’s side have firmly established themselves as genuine contenders for a historic place in the semifinals—and perhaps even an unlikely run to the World Cup final.
