Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has denied allegations that he was behind the supposed invitation of former United States President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) faulted claims by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who reportedly stated that the government “will not forgive Peter Obi for inviting Donald Trump into Nigeria’s situation.”

Obi dismissed the accusation as baseless, stressing that the circumstances surrounding Trump’s recent comments on Nigeria’s security challenges are already known to the public and have “nothing to do with our principal.”

“It seems this government cannot escape thoughts of Peter Obi, and we understand why — his message directly addresses their glaring leadership failures,” the statement read.

Obi criticised the presidency for allegedly using “fabrications” to divert attention from pressing national issues such as insecurity, rising living costs, corruption, and widespread hardship across the country. He added that Onanuga had repeatedly misinterpreted his duties as a presidential spokesperson, turning them into opportunities to attack the opposition.

He further argued that such “political disinformation” is a common tactic employed by governments that lack a clear plan for the future.

“While Onanuga daydreams about Obi, he remains focused on key issues, traveling globally to acquire knowledge and supporting vulnerable Nigerians who have been neglected by the government,” the statement said.

Obi urged Nigerians to ignore false narratives pushed by the presidency and remain committed to the vision of building a better and more secure nation.
