Lagos Releases 2026/2027 School Calendar, Announces Resumption, Holidays, Mid-Term Breaks

The Lagos State Government has officially approved and released the harmonised 2026/2027 academic calendar for all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, fixing Monday, September 14, 2026, as the official resumption date for the new academic session.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, who explained that the calendar was finalised after extensive consultations with key education stakeholders coordinated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA).

According to the commissioner, the harmonised calendar is designed to ensure a well-organised academic year, improve educational planning, and create uniformity across schools in Lagos State.

The statement reads:

“According to the Commissioner, the calendar was finalised after two stakeholders’ meetings where participants reviewed and agreed on key dates for the new academic session.”

First Term Schedule

Under the approved calendar, the first term will commence on Monday, September 14, 2026, and run until Monday, December 21, 2026, when schools will proceed on vacation.

The term includes:

  • Resumption: Monday, September 14, 2026
  • First half: September 14 – October 30, 2026
  • Primary Open Day: Thursday, October 29, 2026
  • Secondary Open Day: Friday, October 30, 2026
  • Mid-term break: November 2 – November 6, 2026
  • Second half resumes: November 9, 2026
  • Vacation begins: Monday, December 21, 2026

The total number of school days for the first term is 64 days.

The calendar also recognises:

  • Independence Day – Thursday, October 1, 2026
  • World Teachers’ Day – Monday, October 5, 2026

Second Term Schedule

Schools will resume for the second term on Monday, January 11, 2027, with academic activities ending on Friday, April 16, 2027 before vacation begins on Monday, April 19, 2027.

  • Primary Open Day: Thursday, February 18
  • Secondary Open Day: Friday, February 19
  • Mid-term break: February 22 – February 26

The second term will last 61 school days.

Public holidays during the term include:

  • Eid-el-Fitr – March 10–11, 2027
  • Good Friday – March 26, 2027
  • Easter Monday – March 29, 2027

Third Term Schedule

The third term will begin on Monday, May 3, 2027, and conclude on Friday, July 30, 2027, with the long vacation commencing on Monday, August 2, 2027.

The schedule includes:

  • Resumption: May 3, 2027
  • First half: May 3 – June 11
  • Primary Open Day: Thursday, June 10
  • Secondary Open Day: Friday, June 11
  • Mid-term break: June 14 – June 18
  • Second half resumes: June 21
  • End of session: Friday, July 30
  • Vacation begins: Monday, August 2

The third term consists of 57 school days.

Public holidays and observances include:

  • Workers’ Day – May 1, 2027
  • Eid-el-Kabir – May 17–18, 2027
  • Children’s Day – May 27, 2027
  • Democracy Day – June 12, 2027

Staff Development Before Resumption

The government also approved a Staff Professional Development period before students return to school.

Schools are permitted to choose any two days between Monday, September 7, and Friday, September 11, 2026, for teacher training and professional development, with each school deciding its preferred dates.

Schools Must Observe Open Days

The commissioner stressed that all schools must hold Open Day sessions during each term to encourage interaction between parents and teachers.

While participation is compulsory, individual schools may determine the specific timing.

International Schools Given Deadline

Schools operating international curricula that require adjustments to the approved calendar have been directed to comply with government guidelines and submit a Calendar Flexibility Application on or before Friday, August 21, 2026.

Total School Days

According to the approved calendar, students will spend a total of 182 school days in classrooms during the 2026/2027 academic session.

The calendar also highlights important international observances, including:

  • International Literacy Day – September 8, 2026
  • International Day of Education – January 24, 2027

Commissioner Urges Compliance

Alli-Balogun urged both public and private schools to strictly adhere to the approved calendar, describing it as part of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to delivering quality education and ensuring a predictable, efficient, and well-coordinated academic year.

He advised members of the public, parents, school administrators and education stakeholders to access the complete academic calendar through the official website of the Office of Education Quality Assurance and other official Lagos State Government digital platforms.
