Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is already gathering momentum, with President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and other political figures becoming central to early national discussions.

As of Monday, July 20, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

This means political parties now have limited time to resolve internal disputes, complete candidate documentation and prepare for the official campaign period.

Latest INEC Updates on 2027 Election

INEC has continued preparations for the 2027 general election despite legal disputes over parts of its timetable.

The commission recently extended the deadline for political parties to submit names and personal particulars of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections from July 11 to midnight on July 14, 2026.

The extension followed appeals from political parties through the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC.

INEC also said parties must upload candidate details through its Candidate Nomination Portal. Only candidates properly submitted by their parties can move forward in the process.

When Will INEC Publish the Candidate List?

INEC is expected to publish candidates’ personal particulars after reviewing submissions from political parties.

This stage is important because it allows members of the public, party members and rival candidates to inspect submitted documents and raise legal objections where necessary.

However, voters should note that portal submission does not always mean a candidate’s place on the ballot is completely settled. Court cases, substitutions and party disputes can still affect the final list.

Tinubu’s 2027 Party Move

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking re-election under the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The State House earlier confirmed that Vice President Kashim Shettima submitted Tinubu’s nomination and expression of interest forms to APC officials, signalling Tinubu’s intention to contest for a second term.

APC has also moved to consolidate around the Tinubu-Shettima ticket. Reports say the party uploaded Tinubu, Shettima and its National Assembly candidates to INEC’s nomination portal before the deadline.

This gives APC an early organisational advantage, especially if the party avoids major post-primary disputes.

Peter Obi’s 2027 Party Move

Peter Obi remains one of the biggest opposition figures ahead of 2027.

After contesting the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, Obi’s next political platform has been a major subject of national debate.

Recent reports say Obi was screened and cleared by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for its presidential primary. The party later announced moves around an Obi-led ticket, with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso widely reported as part of the opposition alignment.

Obi has also released a broad 2027 vision focused on unity, education, healthcare, jobs, agriculture, industrial growth and better governance.

Still, voters should wait for INEC’s official publication of candidates’ particulars and final list before treating any ticket as fully settled.

Court Cases May Still Shape the Race

One major issue hanging over the 2027 election is litigation.

INEC has appealed Federal High Court judgments that questioned parts of its timetable and schedule of activities. The commission warned that unclear timelines could create confusion for parties, candidates and voters.

This means some party submissions and nomination disputes may still end up in court before the final ballot is confirmed.

What Voters Should Watch Next

The next important things to watch are:

  1. INEC’s publication of candidate particulars.
  2. Court rulings on party nominations and timetable disputes.
  3. Confirmation of final presidential and vice-presidential tickets.
  4. Party campaign launches.
  5. PVC collection and voter registration updates.
  6. INEC’s final list of candidates.

The 2027 election is moving from speculation to official preparation. Tinubu’s APC has already made strong moves toward a re-election campaign, while Peter Obi’s opposition platform continues to build national attention.

However, INEC’s final candidate publication and pending court cases will determine how the race fully takes shape.

For now, voters should follow only official INEC updates, verify candidate lists when published and avoid fake political documents circulating online.
