While Senegal dominated most categories, Nigeria shone in individual events, with Ebipatei Lienbofa and Ebi Bigos winning gold. Benin Republic secured third place, and ECOWAS praised the tournament for promoting regional unity.

Senegal emerged victorious at the 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament, defeating host nation Nigeria 4-1 in the team final held in Abuja.

VerseNews gathered that despite the loss, Nigeria showed significant improvement from its third-place finish in 2023, cementing its position as a rising force in West African wrestling.

The competition, which ran from March 6 to 8 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, was part of ECOWAS’ 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Eleven nations participated in the three-day event, with Senegal dominating in the 66kg, 86kg, 100kg, and 120kg weight categories, while Nigeria secured its only victory in the 76kg division.

Although Senegal took the overall title, Nigerian wrestlers excelled in individual events, with Ebipatei Lienbofa and Ebi Bigos securing gold medals. Benin Republic claimed third place after a 5-0 victory over Guinea.

ECOWAS officials praised the tournament for promoting regional unity and cultural heritage, with cash prizes awarded to top-performing teams and athletes.
