The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) did not attend a meeting called by representatives of the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to avert the planned nationwide strike on October 3.

According to the two labour centres, government’s invitation came late as they had scheduled engagements outside Abuja, the federal capital.

VerseNews had earlier reported that the government had urgently summoned this meeting in an attempt to persuade organized labor to postpone the planned strike.

Originally scheduled for noon at Aso Villa, the meeting was later rescheduled to the evening to accommodate the labor leaders’ travel plans.

The invitation from the government was received by NLC and TUC on Friday morning through the federal ministry of labor and employment, with the letter dated September 29, and signed on behalf of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, by Emmanuel Igbinosun, the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations.
