Nigeria has dropped to 90th globally in the latest Henley Passport Index ranking, with Nigerian passport holders able to access 44 destinations without obtaining a regular visa before travelling.

The July 2026 ranking places Nigeria among the lower-ranked African passports, despite the country remaining one of the continent’s most populous and economically important nations.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a prior visa. This includes visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, visitor permit and electronic travel authorisation access.

Nigeria’s passport ranking in 2026

According to the latest ranking, Nigeria is placed 90th globally with access to 44 destinations.

This means Nigerian passport holders still need to apply for visas before travelling to many popular destinations, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, most European countries and several Asian countries.

Nigeria’s latest position also shows that the country’s passport remains weak compared to other African countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Morocco, Kenya and Ghana.

Where Nigeria stands

For many Nigerians, this means more travel restrictions, longer visa processes and higher costs when applying to visit major countries for education, tourism, medical treatment, business or relocation.

Why Nigeria’s passport remains weak

Several factors affect passport strength, including:

  • Diplomatic agreements with other countries
  • Visa reciprocity
  • Migration pressure
  • Security perception
  • Economic stability
  • International relations
  • Trust in travel documentation

A passport becomes stronger when more countries allow its holders to enter without demanding a visa before arrival.

Global strongest passports in 2026

Globally, Singapore remains at the top of the Henley Passport Index with access to 192 destinations.

Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates are also among the highest-ranked passports in the world, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the global ranking.

What this means for Nigerian travellers

The latest ranking means Nigerians should always confirm visa requirements before making travel plans.
