VIDEO: Abuja Residents Play Love at Wike’s ₦1.5 Billion Renovated City Gate

• Abuja residents have started visiting and taking photos at the newly renovated Abuja City Gate after its inauguration by President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, with the landmark expected to become a major tourism and recreation destination.

Abuja residents have begun visiting the newly renovated Abuja City Gate following its official inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, with many taking photographs and admiring the transformed national landmark.

The remodelled City Gate, delivered by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, was commissioned as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration and the 50th anniversary of the Federal Capital Territory.

Represented by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, President Tinubu described the Abuja City Gate as one of Nigeria’s most recognisable landmarks, saying the renovation reflects the administration’s commitment to modernising the nation’s capital.

According to the President, the upgraded monument now offers visitors a befitting first impression of Abuja, featuring improved architectural designs, landscaping, and a symbolic water fountain representing Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking at the ceremony, Wike commended Julius Berger for transforming what he described as a neglected national monument into a modern attraction.

He revealed that the renovation was inspired after the First Lady expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the City Gate.

According to Wike, Julius Berger designed and executed the entire remodelling project, including the installation of the iconic water fountain, landscaping, parking spaces and other visitor-friendly facilities.

The FCT Minister also announced plans to partner with Julius Berger through a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure the landmark is properly maintained.

He added that the surrounding area would be further developed with restaurants, car parks, public conveniences and recreational spaces, making the City Gate a major tourism and leisure destination where residents and visitors can relax, take photographs and host social events.

Julius Berger Managing Director, Engr. Dr. Peer Lubasch, said the company was honoured to modernise a monument it originally helped construct in 1991, adding that the goal was to preserve its history while upgrading it into a world-class public space.

Since its reopening, the renovated City Gate has attracted residents eager to experience the upgraded landmark, with many describing it as one of Abuja’s newest recreational and sightseeing destinations.
