As the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) gets underway, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are once again among the favourites to lift the trophy, with a record 10 continental titles already to their name.

The nine-time African champions are chasing an unprecedented 11th WAFCON crown, relying on a blend of experienced leaders and match-winning talents capable of making the difference on the biggest stage.

Here are five Super Falcons stars expected to play key roles in Nigeria’s quest for another African title.

1. Esther Okoronkwo

Forward Esther Okoronkwo heads into the tournament as one of Nigeria’s biggest attacking threats after delivering a series of decisive performances at the last WAFCON.

The AFC Toronto star played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s dramatic comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final, scoring from the penalty spot before providing two assists as the Super Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2.

Her outstanding display earned her the Woman of the Match award in the final, and Nigeria will once again rely on her creativity, vision and eye for goal.

2. Rasheedat Ajibade

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade remains one of the most influential figures in the Super Falcons squad.

The PSG forward was named Player of the Tournament at the previous WAFCON after leading Nigeria with her outstanding performances, leadership and relentless work rate.

Beyond her goals and assists, Ajibade’s experience and ability to inspire teammates will be crucial as Nigeria pursues another continental triumph and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

3. Chiamaka Nnadozie

Nigeria’s last line of defence will once again be CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers, the Brighton shot-stopper has built a reputation for producing crucial saves in high-pressure matches.

4. Halimatu Ayinde

Experienced midfielder Halimatu Ayinde is expected to provide stability in the heart of Nigeria’s midfield.
