The Federal Government has identified seven common mistakes that could prevent Nigerians from securing jobs in the public service, urging applicants to follow official recruitment procedures and avoid recruitment scams.

The warning was issued by the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in a public awareness advisory published on its official website on Tuesday.

According to the commission, many job seekers unknowingly reduce their chances of employment by ignoring recruitment guidelines, submitting incorrect information, or relying on unofficial sources for job vacancies.

Seven mistakes that could cost you a government job

The FCC listed the following as the most common errors applicants should avoid:

  1. Applying through unverified recruitment websites or platforms.
  2. Paying individuals who promise to secure government jobs.
  3. Ignoring application requirements and eligibility criteria.
  4. Missing application deadlines.
  5. Providing inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
  6. Failing to prepare for aptitude tests, interviews, and other recruitment stages.
  7. Assuming every government job advertisement online is genuine.

The commission warned that fraudsters frequently create fake recruitment portals, social media posts, and misleading advertisements to deceive unsuspecting job seekers.

It advised Nigerians to verify every recruitment announcement through official government channels before submitting applications or sharing personal information.

The FCC also cautioned applicants against paying anyone who claims to have the influence to secure employment in any federal ministry, department, or agency.

“Applicants should be cautious of anyone requesting payment or claiming they can guarantee employment, and they are encouraged to report suspicious recruitment activities through appropriate channels,” the commission stated.

The agency emphasized that recruitment into federal institutions follows established procedures, adding that anyone demanding money or attempting to manipulate the recruitment process is acting illegally.

It further advised applicants to carefully study the eligibility requirements for every vacancy, including educational qualifications, age limits, professional certifications, work experience, and required supporting documents.

The commission urged candidates not to wait until the final days of a recruitment exercise before submitting their applications, warning that delays often result in incomplete submissions or missed deadlines.

Applicants were also encouraged to thoroughly review their personal details, qualifications, and contact information before completing their applications, as errors could affect verification and eligibility.

Beyond submitting applications, the FCC advised candidates to prepare adequately for aptitude tests, interviews, and other assessment stages, noting that recruitment does not end after filling out an application form.

The commission also warned Nigerians to be wary of job advertisements that promise guaranteed employment, demand payment before processing applications, or create unnecessary urgency, describing such offers as common signs of recruitment fraud.

FCC Clarifies Its Role

The Federal Character Commission clarified that it does not recruit employees into federal ministries, departments, or agencies.

Instead, it explained that its constitutional responsibility is to ensure fairness and compliance with the Federal Character Principle under Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The commission noted that it operates a recruitment portal where verified vacancies from federal institutions can be published, allowing Nigerians to access authentic job opportunities before applying through the recruiting agency’s official platform.

It urged job seekers to verify recruitment sources, read application requirements carefully, avoid paying anyone for employment, submit accurate information, and apply only through official government channels to improve their chances of securing legitimate public service jobs.
