The Federal Government has declared an end to the use of personal email accounts, including Yahoo Mail and similar platforms, for official public-sector transactions.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a digital transformation summit held in Abuja to mark the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone.

According to Walson-Jack, over 115,000 official GovMail accounts have already been activated to provide secure, traceable, and professional communication channels for civil servants across the federal government.

She stressed that government business should no longer rely on personal email addresses, informal communication channels, or scattered records that could compromise institutional memory and accountability.

“Thanks to Galaxy Backbone, the days of Yahoo Mail are over for transacting government business,” she stated.

The Head of Service explained that official government information must remain within government systems even when public officers leave their positions, emphasizing the importance of preserving institutional records.

She also revealed that the Federal Government achieved a major digital milestone by fully digitising the work processes of all 38 federal ministries and extra-ministerial departments before the end of December 2025.

According to her, the transition to a paperless civil service is aimed at eliminating delays, reducing bureaucracy, improving transparency, and making government operations easier to track and monitor.

Walson-Jack praised Galaxy Backbone for providing critical digital infrastructure such as GovMail, the iGovernment cloud platform, and high-speed internet services that support government operations.

She noted that digital transformation is not merely a technological project but a practical reform designed to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery across the public sector.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, urged the government to accelerate its digital transformation agenda, noting that data has become more valuable than crude oil in the modern global economy.

The development marks another step in the Federal Government’s push toward a fully digital and technology-driven civil service system.
